The Populism Specialist Group is one of the largest groups within the Political Studies Association.
Our Goal
The group's goal is to promote the study of populist discourses, movements and parties at a local, national and international level. It aims at encouraging a rigorous theoretical and conceptual grounding of populism research as well as the strengthening of its analytical scope through comparative, quantitative and qualitative methods.
The group purports to facilitate a critical dialogue about contemporary democratic politics, and populism’s complex role within that. It particularly invites the participation and contribution of international scholars from countries and regions where populism has marked political culture, shaping political frontiers and stimulating antithetical discursive articulations.
We are the Specialist Group of the Year 2025
We are thrilled to announce that our group has won the PSA Prize for the Specialist Group of the Year for having “raised awareness of the study of politics and increased the impact of the discipline”!
The current convening team would like to extend heartfelt thanks to all past conveners for their tireless and efforts since the group's founding in 2016: Emmy Eklundh, Yannis Stavrakakis, Andy Knott, Marina Prentoulis, Giorgos Katsambekis, Alen Toplišek, Lone Sørensen and George Newth. We are equally grateful to all our members for sustaining and growing such a vibrant and inclusive community — one that brings together both established and emerging scholars and pushes the boundaries of the study of populism. Together, we have created an important international hub that fosters critical perspectives and plays a pivotal role in expanding the field. Ideas that were once considered ‘marginal’ now stand at the heart of the debate.
OUR ACTIVITIES
The group holds a number of academic activities throughout the year, including an annual workshop and participation at the PSA annual conference. Furthermore, we are now launching our podcast, Populism. Explore our website to find out more.
